I didn't plan to become a diplomat. I didn't plan to manage $590 million in budgets across war zones. And I certainly didn't plan to put on body armor over a suit to meet with government ministers in Kabul.
But that's exactly what happened.
My Background
I spent 15 years as a U.S. diplomat managing operations and budgets across some of the world's most complex environments:
Afghanistan | Democratic Republic of Congo | South Africa | Zambia | Dominican Republic | United States
In these roles, I managed budgets up to $590 million and led teams of 10-30 people navigating challenges most executives only encounter in case studies:
-
Political instability and government collapse
-
Cultural dynamics where Western management frameworks failed completely
-
High-stakes operations where decisions had serious consequences
-
Cross-cultural teams with competing loyalties and worldviews
-
Environments where "business as usual" was impossible
What I Learned
Trust precedes systems. In Afghanistan, I learned that accountability frameworks designed for high-trust environments collapse in loyalty-based cultures. You have to build trust first, then performance follows.
Local intelligence beats headquarters control. In Congo, I reduced financial risk by 40%—not by adding more oversight, but by empowering people who understood the local context better than I ever could.
Morale is operational. In South Africa, I saw how protecting team belief and engagement wasn't "soft skills"—it was the difference between mission success and failure.
Leading in chaos requires humility. My Afghan team members taught me to read cultural signals I would have missed. My Congolese colleagues showed me how to mitigate corruption without compromising integrity. Leading effectively meant learning from the people I was supposed to lead.
The Transition
After 15 years in diplomatic service, I transitioned into executive coaching and keynote speaking.
I realized that the challenges I navigated daily—cross-cultural complexity, high-stakes uncertainty, managing without perfect information, building teams across radical differences—are exactly what senior leaders face in corporate settings today. The scale might be different. The stakes might be different. But the principles are the same.
Whether you're a Country Director opening an office in Nairobi, a VP managing distributed teams across five continents, or an executive navigating a crisis that feels overwhelming, the lessons from managing in Afghanistan and Congo apply.
My Work Today
I now work with executives and organizations through:
-
Executive Coaching — 1-on-1 engagements focused on cross-cultural leadership, high-stakes operations, emerging market challenges, and leading through uncertainty.
-
Keynote Speaking — Delivering practical, story-driven talks on leading in chaos, cross-cultural complexity, and high-stakes decision-making.
My approach is simple: I don't teach from theory. I teach from experience. We work on your specific challenges using frameworks proven in environments where failure had real consequences.
My Memoir
I wrote Accidental Success to chronicle the leadership lessons learned across Afghanistan, Congo,
and Africa—stories of navigating chaos, building trust in impossible situations, and leading
when the usual playbook doesn't work. Available on Amazon → here
